Hamburger Hamlet

There are still a few Hamburger Hamlets around: One in Pasadena, one in Sherman Oaks, a new one over on Larchmont and ones in Virginia and Maryland.  Still, I think of the ones that were in Beverly Hills and Westwood Village as “my” restaurants and since they’re gone, I can put them in this section.  Also in 2011, they closed the one on Sunset near Doheny that was a favorite of many.  For the last few years of his life, Dean Martin (who lived not far away) would be in there almost every night and it was said that he welcomed fans to just sit down with him and chat.  I kept thinking I oughta go up and see if that was really so but I never got around to it.

When that one on Sunset closed, a number of articles claimed it was the original location.  Not true.  The first Hamburger Hamlet which opened in 1950 was indeed on the Sunset Strip but farther east.  It was at 8931 Sunset, not far from where the Whisky a Go Go nightclub w0uld later flourish for a time.

The original location

The Hamlet was the invention of a Hollywood costumer named Marilyn Lewis and her husband, Harry.  Harry was an actor, perhaps best remembered for his role in the Humphrey Bogart film, Key Largo.  The way the story goes, they opened the first one with all their savings — about $3,000 or $3,500 depending on which account you read. That opening was just before Halloween of 1950 and when they were about to open the doors, they discovered they couldn’t cook. The gas hadn’t been turned on and they were so tapped out that they couldn’t afford to pay the deposit and couldn’t afford to not open on schedule. Marilyn got in touch with a gas man and struck an under-the-table bargain: If he’d come over and turn them on anyway, he could eat there for free as long as they were in business. He did both these things.

The original idea was to open an actors’ hangout but the place quickly caught on with folks of all different vocations and other outlets quickly followed.  They made a great flame-broiled burger and while you could order it with any of about a dozen configurations (toppings, add-ons, etc.), I thought the plain, unadorned version was a work of art.  It came in a little plastic basket with a handful of potato chips and it was just the perfect lunch.  If I was there at dinner, I’d usually order the same thing but with a cup of soup…usually their rich lobster bisque.

There were other great things on the menu that came along later.  As they expanded, they expanded well beyond burgers.  The rotisserie chicken was particularly exquisite.  But it was difficult to go to Hamburger Hamlet and not order a hamburger.

Our family went once or twice a month to one of the two Hamlets then in Beverly Hills…and later, when one closed down, we gave all our patronage to the other.  It was said that the Hamlet was the first restaurant in that city that actively hired blacks as food servers.  My father told me that, I think.  He once said he wouldn’t want to give his business to an establishment that didn’t, and I admired him for that view.

I also have two vivid memories of the Hamburger Hamlet that was in Westwood — on Weyburn, more or less where a Jerry’s Famous Deli is now situated.  One is of lunching there just before my mother took me to see Bambi at the Village Theater, right around the corner, in 1957.  Over my Hamlet burger, I received cautionary words about not getting too upset if and when Bambi’s mother was killed in the movie we were about to see.  I believe I said something like, “I won’t.  Could I have some more ketchup?”

The other memory is of taking my first date there.  Her name was Karen and we ate burgers at the Hamlet in advance of heading down the street to a revival house that was showing the W.C. Fields movie, The Bank Dick.  As we were sitting there in the restaurant, Karen told me she was having a very good time being out with me but said something about how I shouldn’t expect anything more than a good-night kiss.  I believe I said something like, “I won’t.  Could I have some more ketchup?”

UPDATE: The Hamlet on Van Nuys Boulevard is back in business, thanks to the management of Killer Shrimp investing in the place. I’d love to see it make a big comeback but I recently went to the reopened place and was very disappointed. I had a hamburger that was nowhere near the old standard and just plain not very good…and I thought, “Well, if they can’t get that right…” If it remains open and thriving for a while and I hear approving things from others, I’ll probably give it another chance because I did love the old chain and would love to see it back in all its glory. But they have to do more than just offer the same name and menu in the same room.

    I went to the real original when I moved from conn to bev hills and did my jr and sen yrs at bev hills graduated in 66 went to hamlets from 64 to 80 when I left la for Jackson hole at the time. I rember collins the chef on old sunset the one near the whiskey and saw sammy Davis do an impromtu tal dance for 20 minutes with louis belson drumming a table that was cool for a 16 year old kid from waspy southport conn. Loved beverly dr Ave Bedford stores they were my favorites in 60s tget started seeing friends at van nuys and new sunset store does anybody know what happened to Mr. Brown who was Mr at Bedford and beverly in 66 to 70

    When working for Seahorse Finance HQ, a bunch of us often had lunch at the Hamlet in downtown LA. Awesome burgers, especially the blue cheese one. Remember on called “Il Duce.”

    I worked at the Hamlet on Centinela, West L.A. I worked along side old timers, Authell, Julia, Liz.Harry would come sit at the counter…Mark Spitz would sit at the counter and have the footlong chili dog. Susan Hayward stopped by in a limo on her way home from the hospital suffering from brain cancer…Marilyn came in once, and was extremely rude to everyone.

    I worked at Beverly Drive at first then transferred to Westwood, although I did fill in occasionally at Berendo, Century City, and Sherman Oaks.
    I met my future husband at Beverly Drive alternating between cashier and hostess. I was fired for dating a co-worker. Then -husband went to be a server on National Blvd. I missed all the great servers I met and worked with! Interestingly enough, ten years later they opened a Hamlet in Las Vegas, and we were there for an anniversary, and ran into Betty, who we both worked with at Beverly Drive! Miss the Onion Soup Fondue and the chocolate cake! My family always took us to the Brentwood location since we lived there, and named my first born after a really cool server named Emma who worked in Brentwood. Hope the Sherman Oaks location gets a revival.

    Just ordered the book, “Marilyn, Are You Sure You Can Cook? He Asked” from Amazon, a memoir of the Hamlet’s founder, Marilyn Lewis (RIP 2017), including many of the restaurant’s recipes. There are a number of used issues still available (mine cost $1.75 + $3.99 shipping, condition “Very Good”). SO excited to actually TRY to replicate some of that amazing food– not to mention read the colorful stories about the place!

    A friend of mine took me there when we were in high school, 1952.
    Went there for many years. For awhile I lived on Clark St, now renamed, which was within walking distance. Whisky a go go was on the corner of Clark and Sunset. In those days, so many of the LA restaurants, even fast foods, actually had very good food.

    I just walked by the Sherman Oaks Hamburger Hamlet last night. There was a sing on the window saying they were closed for renovations, though there was also a sign saying their liquor licence was revoked. Not quite sure what is going on.

    I remember the one in Woodland Hills at Topanga Canyon Blvd and Ventura Blvd. When I was a kid (11, 12) 1975-76 the waitresses were all black ladies. Our favorite server was named “Bessie” or “Elsie”. They had great food!

    I used to dine at the Bonwitt Teller Beverly Hills location in the late 70s and Eighties. They served a avocado bacon tomato American cheese grill with Fritos that is the best sandwich of all time. I think it was the bread and grill that made it perfect every time. They had a kids store Bambola next door and a great salon.

    Th old Hamlet had a wonder patty melt. It was served open face on a slice of rye bread. On each side was another half-slice of rye bread with onions and cheddar cheese (not American). My lae mother used to order it all thetime.

    I ate often at the Hollywood Blvd location, but I was a little confused for a second because there was a hamper Hampton on Highland near Willoughby -but there was really the forerunner of the gourmet hamburger. It had strong lunchtime star pedigrees. I never ate there, but fondly remember my print shop teacher talking about the place.I think he ate there often. Mr, Parker. Lol, He had a very lucrative side business so maybe that’s how he was able to afford the food there. ? I heard it was very expensive. He was a high school print shop teacher after all

    Loved Hamburger Hamlet on Sunset. I worked in the music industry for some years and our company’s IT wizard, Peter Troesch, also worked for Hamlet as their IT wizard as well. Lobster bisque was the best; I had to order it every time we went there! I also had the pleasure of meeting Francis Davis, Miles Davis’ former wife, when she was hostess there. What a beautiful and gracious woman. I see articles online that she is trying to open a jazz club in the city and I hope that it comes to pass somehow.

    I worked at the HH on Wilshire in the early 80’s – my most famous regular was Ken Norton. After about a year, I was moved to Encino to be a bartender at their super chic disco, Le Hot Club. Now THAT was a great gig – super money, hip place.

    I worked at HH on Sepulveda in the mid 1970’s. One day a man came in wearing a suit, to pick a to go order. He told me he had Susan Hayward in the car, she was going home to die from brain cancer, and would I like to go out and have a look at her….NO! I said. Working at the HH you never knew who would walk through the front door, Mark Spitz(he loved the footlong hotdog w/chili), The Lennon Sisters, Lou Ferrigno, and others. Marilyn Lewis was a TYRANT! She never came to store #12(Sepulveda), and the older staff, Julia, Delores,Liz, Rebecca were glad of it. Harry was a very nice man, as was Joe Lorden, head of HR. As for the lobster bisque, I never found those chunks everyone talks about, it was thin, and hardly anything that resembled lobster was found in it. The Onion Soup was great, as was the Chicken Salad, and the rest of the menu was fine, except the Kugle, and no one ordered it!

    I met my wife (we will soon celebrate our 38th anniversary) on my first shift at the Hamburger Hamlet in Brentwood. It was October, 1978, and during my relatively short time there (I was a cashier, she was a hostess) I “met” Goldie Hawn, Graham Chapman, Hal Linden, George Carlin, Lou Adler and many other celebrities … all of whom just enjoyed having a casual, comfortable meal of Zircles, burgers, “those potatoes,” and that amazing lobster bisque. This was all well before the “fern bar” era that came later. I learned my first words of Spanish from the wonderfully gregarious Panamanian waitresses. Great memories.

    I remember the Westwood Hamburger Hamlet in 1958. Wells Root (who wrote the movie, Prisoner of Zenda, and episodes of “Bat Masterson,” and “Maverick,” and much more) was teaching a TV writing course at UCLA in the evening. After class, he and a small part of his class would always go to Hamburger Hamlet for food, coffee, and conversation. I attended his classes and conversations several semesters. The class always had interesting people, mostly from the industry. Wells’ brother in law was Robert Wise. His wife Mimi, and her twin sister, were stand-ins for Katherine Hepburn. The food and the conversations were always exceptional!

    I loved going to the Hamburger Hamlet with my family and then my wife! It was a regular! My family rarely ate at home and we always ate at restaurants we thought served quality food as that was our stable! Hamburger Hamlet on Sunset was our favorite! We encountered so many Entertainment notables that it became a family past time in between coffee refills! My wife and I got John Lenons autograph there 1n 1977! I am so sad to hear of it’s demise and so many of my families regular haunts are now gone! I miss LA, never thought I would hear myself say that!

    It was fun for a casual dinner date or lunch. the food was always quality, and I had a friend in college who waitressed at the one in Costa Mesa. I guess that’s another of my visit’s when I return to LA

    I worked at the Hollywood Blvd location in the early 80’s and subbed at Sunset/Doheny and Wilshire Blvd. Really loved working there and eating the food! As others have mentioned, I waited on lots of celebrities. It is one of my great regrets in life that I didn’t ask Vanna White out when she came in to pick up a to-go order! Too bad they’re mostly gone now.

    Wow, this brings back a lot of memories. My family didn’t go there often, but when we did it was usually to the location at Sunset and Doheny, or Westwood.

    Thinking back, this was probably the first place where I ever had lobster bisque, and I’ve been addicted to it ever since, and make quite a good one myself. ;-)

    I was a frequent customer of the Hamlet on Hollywood Boulevard (and any other one I could get to) and my very favorite dish was the Potato Patch Omelet, which I would order whenever I went in. I have a homemade that I want to try, but being as my omelets are always a disaster, I’m afraid of disappointing myself. I am delighted to hear that a couple of the Hamlets are still around and will be visiting one or the other in the near future! Kudos to all the folks who have posted about their experiences as employees of the Hamlet… I have always found the service there to be excellent. You guys are great!

    As a little boy I was always fascinated by the glass cased dioramas of different scenes from “Hamlet” that were all around the restaurant. I made it a ritual to walk up to each one before I had my favorite lobster bisque with garlic bread. I always thought that hamburgers were SUPPOSED to have Russian dressing…those red vinyl booths were unforgettable…I saw many stars there (so my mother told me) but I didn’t know who any of them were, except Adam West (Batman). I was confused when I was taken to Hamburger Hamlet on Sunset near Doheny Rd because I could swear that they had moved or remodeled. The recipe for the bisque pretty much stayed the same over the years and I would always come back to LA and search for my childhood soup…”Just like Mom would make”…God bless Marilyn Lewis.

    I answered an ad. to be hired as a district Manager Trainee for the Hamlets. After working at all them for experience my superior (Mr. Metz) had me base my semi-perminate location at the #1. Sunset Strip restaurant. They’re Home office was located on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills Ca. Numerous celebrity-customers would dine there regularly. Richard Chamberlin lived next door and would eat the same dinner every night (Bacon Cheeseburger, Lobster Bisque soup and rice pudding). Marylyn Lewis (Co-owner) had a special recipe for the Lobster Bisque Soup and, would never allow it to go from the restaurant in fear that it would be analyzed, reproduced and re-marketed. The Lewises, and Manager – Mr. Metz were the greatest employers I had ever worked for.

Diahnn Carrol, Angie Dickson, Irene Cara, John Travolta…I loved the waitresses and there code words…Ruby and Clarice and the scientists..and I will never forget practically being attacked by a Personal assistant because I was remiss and almost gave her the lobster Bisque to go…BIg NO No…she was picking up an order for her boss and turned and said to me …”are you the teenage bitch who took my order , what am I going to tell my boss when I come back with no Lobster bisque..?” WOw..that was some bisque…I learned alot at that place in a short time. Never forgot the Hamlet and the great co-workers.

    My family were regulars at Sunset/Doheny, Westwood, and later Costa Mesa after we moved to OC in the 70s. We miss the place. Used to see a lot of Hollywood people on Doheny even in the 80s. The servers were so great and it was our go-to after movies. I remember being sad when they remodeled Costa Mesa and took out a lot of the pub-esque paneling and fixtures to update it.

    In our home in London, we still make our own “those potatoes” on weekends and we have been known to entreat each other to “eat the sides, I pray thee.”

    frequented the Hamlets in Westwood and Brentwood while attending UCLA in the ’70-’80s. they had, if I recall correctly 3-5 $2.50 dinner specials which fit my student budget perfectly. Also, of course, adored their burgers. Thought they were a black owned business at first. Many years later I took my son to a Hamlet in the DC area and was mildly disappointed. Still, fond memories

    I was never quite sure if Hamburger Hamlet was fancy or casual – maybe it seemed fancy when I was a teenager, but by the time I became an adult, there were few places in Los Angeles where you’d be turned away at the door for a fashion faux pas. Since you mentioned the Hamburger Hamlet on Van Nuys Boulevard, I’ll tell a story. It opens at about 11:30 weekdays, so my partner and I would zoom over there often a wee bit early to get a good parking place, and sometimes we had to wait outside on the sidewalk for the doors to open. One day we got there at the same time as the manager who recognized us as regulars; she opened the door and greeted us with a hearty “Welcome to Hamburger Hell!”
    The hamburgers were wonderful, but I liked to make a meal with several items from the side order menu: zucchini zirckles, Those Potatoes and popcorn shrimp, all washed down with a root beer float.

    I remember the one near Doheny on Sunset fondly. While at UCLA in 1982 I bumped into Cheryl Ladd while she went to the rest room and she gave me a seductive smile. I will never forgive myself for not hitting on her when she returned to her table. She was gorgeous and looked better in real life than on TV. Oh yeah the food was good. I loved the Hamlets.

    As a child growing up in San Fernando Valley, my parents would take me to the Hamburger Hamlet , located on Van Nuys Blvd. at least once a month. For me, their burgers were my ‘filet mignon’and my dad – he loved the Gumbo! We would especially wait for our favorite waitress, Miss Trellis. She always had a smile and a kind saying when she brought our dinner.

    I worked at two locations. First in Pasadena from 1985 to 1987. I transferred to Sunset location and worked there until 1995. Wow, all those celebrities! I saw and waited on Dean Martin many times. The stories I could tell you! Here’s one: He always had a driver deliver him there, and take him home. Yes, he drank. Yes, he smoked. If there wasn’t an ashtray, he flicked his cigarettes on the floor. We got a call one night, after he left. Seems he didn’t have his teeth, and we were asked to check for them. He had taken them out to eat, wrapped them in a napkin, and left them on the table. I don’t think we ever found them, after checking through all the waste cans. LOL I used to keep a list of all the actors, singers etc who came through the door. Too many to remember, but always, such a great place to work and eat! Sadly missed! John

    I was at the Sunset near Doheny location in the 1970’s late one night with some friends. We went into the back dining room, to your left as you walked into the restaurant, which was totally empty except for a corner table in the dimly lit room. The people at the table were having a great time and laughing. I looked over at the table only to see Lisa Minelli, with Sammy Davis Jr.,and I honestly forgot who the third person was. I have a million true stories just like that, fun days.

    Noel Decker I waited tables at the Costa Mesa shop soon after it opened, or so I thought – 1975? Were you there then? I worked with a great crew had a helluva time. I was told that the Lewis’ started with nearly all black servers and won some awards for the benefits to the black community. As time passed and the chain grew this went away. Do you remember getting slammed just before any popular movie would begin and then again after the movie let out?The food was way above average and some of it was iconic…Burgers and bisque as mentioned; the oak plank, rice pudding, FOS, Noodle Kugel, etc.
